Oosthuizen making a name for himself at Old Course

'03 British Open Championship

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – The name on his passport – Lodewicus Theodorus – sounds like it belongs in a Wagner opera.

His nickname among friends – Shrek – is not much better.

Louis Oosthuizen found a better way to make a name for himself Friday at St. Andrews, where he carefully navigated the Old Course through light wind and short spells of rain for a 5-under 67 to take the early lead in the British Open.

“Golf Is Not a Game Of Perfect”

By Dr. Bob Rotella with Bob Cullen

Some of Dr. Retella’s maxims include:

  • On the first tee, a golfer must expect only two things of him or herself:  to have fun, and to focus his/her mind properly on every shot.
  • Golfers must learn to love the challenge when they hit a ball into the rough, trees, or sand.  The alternatives—anger, fear, whining, and cheating—do no good.
  • Confidence is crucial to good golf.  Confidence is simply the aggregate of the thoughts you have about yourself.
  • It is more important to be decisive than to be correct when preparing to pay any golf shot or put.

Try this the next time you play a round of golf, and will see how much more fun you will have.  Oh, did mention, ”This will improve the game of even the most casual weekend player.”

BwgolfHow to Improve My Golf Swing

By Tricia Deed

Professional golfers spend years working on their perfect golf swings. It would be nice to say just hit the golf ball. But it does not work that way.

Professional golfers are chronically receiving professional coaching and lessons. They also practice, drill, and refine their golf swings just as you are also trying to improve your golf swing.  Each golfer is unique in the sense that the golf swing is made up of your address. How to improve my golf swing lies in your posture and stance when you prepare yourself to swing at the golf ball and no two people are alike.  Once you have the correct golf swing plane, everything else will fall into place.

It is also your head position, shoulder turn, body turn, hip movement, hand wrist and forearm strength, your overall body stength and flexibility, and lastly the rhythm, timing, smoothness and tension in the follow through which controls the golf swing.  You are striving towards peak performance with body ease to shave strokes off your score and be the best that you can be and if possible beyond your expectations. The mental power will be in your attitude.

Of course, you have heard that when our game is not up to the standards that we expect we are constantly reminded to “go back to basics”.  We may not like taking our medicine, but the truth is the basics never change.  We need educational reminders and repetition to keep our skills up to power and in this game it is our consistency that matters a great deal. Do not hesitate to ask for help with golf instructions.

Slicing the golf ball is caused by a hundred different things.  Try to analyze what you may be doing incorrectly.  Take a look at your grip, your balance, your stance, and slow down the motion of your golf swing analyzing your weak points.

How’s your grip?  When driving a vehicle one never grips the wheel with tension. It would hinder steering ability.  Yet, I tend to choke or hold my golf grip too tightly.  Then that tightness works up the muscles of the arms and I’m in trouble before I attempt to hit the ball. You too have probably done this.

The golf grip is likened to the steering wheel of the vehicle, you need some looseness in your hands to steer the shaft which effects the flight of the golf ball.  Take a studied look at your grip. Once you have experimented, corrected, and established a successful grip, do not change it.

Your probably already know that correct posture is essential to a good golf swing. You need to protect your back as well as to have correct alignment to execute a good golf swing.  Flex your knees and bend from the hips with a straight back.  You do not want to bend from the shoulders causing a rounded spine.

Get in the habit of waddling which is shifting your weight from side to side as well as checking the placement of your toes and heels for foot positioning to acquire the proper balance stance. Normal balance is usually on the balls of the feet, there will be some exceptions.

There is much more information on how to improve my golf swing than I can include in this article. Visit http://www.infotrish.vpweb.com/for additional golf tips to improve your golf swing.

Tips On Golf To Improve Your Game

By Willie Paxton

Every golfer will at some time become frustrated by the challenge improving their golf game. To develop any game requires a reasonable amount of time and effort. For the most part many golfers never practice and never take any golf swing instructions. They just play in an optimism that through the course of a round they can iron out any problems so, the next games will be better that the existing game.
To accomplish a consistent and clear improvement you need to practice between rounds to improve your golf swing and overall game.

To develop the good playing habits that golf requires and to develop the necessary muscle memory, you need to make regular visits to the golf range to practice. You can also employ tactics at the range which your are unable to employ when playing.  Like using a spare club to assist in a parallel address of the ball.  Lay a club 6 inches in front of your feet but Parallel to your feet.  Also point the grip of the club towards your intended target. Your should then line up both feet in a straight line a few inches behind the club but both parallel to the lie of the club.  This will aid you in developing a square stance. If you practice this squaring up routine again and again it will become second nature to you when on the course

In addition to hitting those repetitive shots on the range, many ranges will also have a practice green or a practice bunker for you to try out those awkward approach shots.  You should spend a considerable amount of time working around this area because most amateur golfers do not place their approach shots on the green.  Spend time in this area trying shots into the flag from every conceivable angle  For these short pitches, choke down on the pitching wedge a little, don’t be afraid to swing the club (decelerate), and avoid the tendency to raise your head and follow the flight of the ball.  Do not forge to follow through.  It is a follow through that gives you the height and distance.

I can always remember a lesson I once had with the professional.  Before we used a club at all, he got me to bowl balls into the practice green very much like and under arm cricket bowl.  I was somewhat surprised that it would not be the back swing that gave the shot height and distance but the follow through. Try this for yourself and then transfer the action to the golf club and you will quickly see that the follow through is very important.

Finally, practice your feel for putting on the manicured practice greens that are at most driving ranges.  Use three balls and try to hit three putts from the same spot. You should begin by putting from a distance of three feet from the hole, and increase the distance of the putts throughout the practice session. Also, keep in mind that you should be target putting that is, trying to get the ball as close to the hole as possible.

Dear Friend and Fellow Golfer,
Most club pros don’t think so. And certainly none of the other golf instruction sites will tell you what I’m about to.

You’ll never develop a swing like Tiger’s. Or for that matter, Mickelson’s, Els’s, Daly’s or Garcia’s.

To be brutally frank, no matter how hard you try or how often you practice, odds are you’ll NEVER be able to swing the club like the top tour pros.

Why? Because, like most of us, you weren’t born with their physical ability.

Besides, each of the big-money pros has a swing that’s unique to his (or her) physique. It’s hardwired into the DNA. That’s how they got to be big-money pros.

Does that mean you’ll never play better than you play right now? That you’re doomed to be a duffer? The butt of countless jokes from your buddies? A study in frustration?

No! Nein! Nyet! Non!! No way!
